Tips for Staying Productive While WFH + A Week of Outfits

Due to the coronavirus, a record number of people are on extended WFH for the first time, so I’m sharing some tips as someone who’s been (happily) working from home the past 4 years:

  1. Break up tasks into manageable chunks, approximate how long each task should take, and block them out on your calendar. This will help you stay focused and not waste time getting distracted by the interwebs or your phone because you have set a deadline for when you need to finish the task at hand and move on to the next one. Schedule in lunch breaks as well as 5-10 minutes breaks to stretch, make coffee/tea, snack, scroll through your phone, etc. Try to refrain from taking breaks outside of those you allotted on your calendar.

  2. You can dress comfortably but change out of your PJs and get ready in the morning like you would before an ordinary commute. It’s important to compartmentalize your life when you WFH, and I found changing in and out of my “work clothes” and maintaining a morning and evening routine help me mentally switch gears.

  3. I have an entire room in our house that I use exclusively as my studio, but I understand most people who are WFH for the first time don’t have a room to spare. Still, it is important to dedicate a space in your home for work, like a dining room table. Avoid working in areas of your home that are meant for rest and relaxation. That means getting off the couch or the bed, as nice as that sounds.

  4. Be an introvert :P I say this half facetiously, half seriously. As an introvert, I thrive when I’m left alone to do my work without any interruption, so I don’t have much advice to give in this department. If you are an extrovert who needs social interaction, maybe FaceTime a friend while you’re both WFH, and take breaks together. Is the coronavirus nature’s way of telling us introverts are superior and genetically favorable? Only time will tell as we embark on the biggest WFH experiment in history.
